Amazon Web Services (AWS) is a collection of remote computing services (also called web services) that make up a cloud computing platform, offered by Amazon.com. These services operate from 12 geographical regions across the world. The most central and well-known of these services arguably include Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud and Amazon S3.

AWS began in the early 2000s as a way for Amazon to manage its own internal IT resources. At the time, the company had a rapidly growing number of employees and needed a way to efficiently allocate computing resources. In 2002, Amazon began to offer these resources to customers as a paid service.

The first official launch of a set of AWS services happened in 2006, when it introduced three new services: Amazon S3 (Simple Storage Service), Amazon SQS (Simple Queue Service), and Amazon EC2 (Elastic Compute Cloud). These services allowed developers to access the same highly scalable, reliable, fast, and inexpensive data storage and computing resources that Amazon used internally.

Over the next few years, Amazon expanded its offerings, adding new services such as Amazon RDS (Relational Database Service), Amazon DynamoDB, and Amazon Elastic MapReduce. In 2011, Amazon also introduced Amazon Elastic Block Store (EBS) which provided persistent storage for EC2 instances.

In 2012, Amazon announced a new service called Amazon Elastic Beanstalk, which simplified the process of deploying and scaling web applications. That same year, Amazon also introduced a service called Amazon Redshift, which made it easy to set up and scale a data warehouse.

AWS continued to expand its offerings in 2013, introducing Amazon Kinesis, which enabled real-time processing of streaming data, and Amazon CloudFront, a content delivery network (CDN) service. In 2014, Amazon introduced a new service called Amazon Elastic Container Service (ECS), which made it easy to run and scale containerized applications.

In recent years, AWS has continued to expand its services and capabilities, introducing new offerings such as Amazon SageMaker for machine learning and Amazon Rekognition for image and video analysis. AWS has also expanded to provide services such as IoT and blockchain.

AWS has become one of the most popular cloud computing platforms in the world and has helped to drive the widespread adoption of cloud computing in general. Today, it is used by thousands of businesses and organizations of all sizes, from small startups to large enterprises.
